Fight the Flu

Influenza, or more commonly known as the "flu", is a contagious respiratory infection caused by a virus that infects the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs.

It can be spread from one person to another, simply by breathing in droplets which are released when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks; or touching a contaminated surface.

While it is easy for the flu to spread, it is also simple to prevent the virus from spreading. In fact, it all begins with good personal hygiene and being socially responsible. By doing so, we are keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe from the infection.

So, how exactly do we fight the flu?

Let's start by implementing these five methods: 1. Wash your hands frequently We often come into contact with contaminated surfaces which have been exposed to germs. Hence, it's important to wash your hands regularly with soap and water. Using a hand sanitizer is as an alternative.

2. Get a flu jab

You can request for a flu vaccination from your GP. It is best to get one, especially before going overseas, so you will be less prone to falling victim to influenza.

3. Visit the doctor early

If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, do seek treatment early. Your chances of recovering faster will in turn, be higher.

4. Stay home to rest

If you are unwell, it is best to stay home to recuperate. You will also not be putting others at risk of catching the 'flu bug' from you.

5. Use tissues or masks

When you cough or sneeze, you should cover your nose and mouth with a tissue as germs from your cough/sneeze can spread and infect other people. It is also advisable to wear a mask as a more preventive measure. Also, avoid spitting in public places (it is illegal anyway, and you could be fined $1000 if you are caught so it's best to refrain from doing so).
